Education in the State of Qatar
Education has become today one of the most important issues of the world and, this is not strange because by education the country will become one of the strongest countries economic. Developing education helps to develop countries . Advanced countries has been working to develop their education in school and universities to creare educated generation to help their countries. for example education in the State of Qatar , has made progress, it is interesting to know how it was in the past , how it has become today, What are the facilities that worked to change it education to the better, and what are the Plans and strategies which will make education in Qatar reach the top .
Before the oil was discovered, there was no studying system in Qatar. There were small houses called al- kittab for teaching Quran and Arabic language. In 1918, an Islamic school was opened by Abdul-Aziz almana for adult males. There were just few students in beginning of education. In 1956, the first girls public school was opened and it had four teachers to teach five subjects for 122 students which are Quran, Arabic, arithmetic, ethics, and health. Qatari government issued a decision in 1977 to open the University of Qatar, which included a number of colleges social studies, Islamic studies, and science and was gradually increasing the number of students in all schools and the Qatari government was working to support them financially and provide them with all the means of education. According the to Central Statistical Organization in Qatar,in 1987 there were 89 schools and 33306 students and 2837 teaching staff. Between 1985 to 1987 there were only three specialized school (professional & technical) and one university that included six faculties. There was not any foreign schools at that time The University began in (1973) with the establishment of faculties of education at Qatar University. Today, the University of Qatar Vtdm seven faculties of education and Humanities and Social Sciences, Sharia and Islamic Studies, Engineering, Management and Economics and Faculty of Technology.
Education in Qatar today changed for the better. The development of education was a bold step for the development of the country. There are two main significant changes. The first is the establishment independent schools .Qatar applies the separate school system and schools are government-funded and free to carry out their mission and educational goals with their own commitment to the items set forth in the contract between them and the Education Council SEC made plans to convert all the public schools into independent schools . But this system is still at the beginning as workstarted since the year 2002-2003. Fawzy Salem has been teaching in Qatar for 17 years. He teaches in an independent schools and he prefer it: "You teach them according to their standards, not to the set books." Which means that teachers can teach cleverer students faster. Also the students can come to the school to take extra lesson and this help them to be smart in the future . he added we have a big library which help the students to do their project quickly. But on the other hand some teachers may stop teaching in Independent schools , because it is very difficult , they have to go to the internet to take lessons most of their time, they work for students at their home so they do not have time to take care of their kids . Some students think that the Independent School helps them to improve their skills because, Independent Schools Encourage the study of applied sciences more than encourages the theoretical study which helps them to store information for longer . Some school administrators do not encourage the idea of teachers developing curriculum for students because they think teachers do not have sufficient qualifications to develop lessons for students.
Qatar Foundation is another institution that aims to develop education in Qatar, where it contributes to the establishment of Education City, home to several universities in the city of education and one that includes all services and advanced tools.
There are 5 Ivy League of American universities coming to the education city in Qatar. These universities have only limited seats.. The first Qatari-trained doctors will graduate this year from coronel medical school, VCU teaches art and design for both genders, Carnegie Mellon offers computer & business courses, Texas A & M has engineering courses, George Town teaches Foreign Service course, while Northwestern journalism course will begin in the future. Some non Qatari students prefer to study in education city rather than Qatar University. The American universities think they are bringing different kinds of education to Qataris because the students in some single sex government schools learn by heart. I disagree because many private schools on Qatar have mix gender class rooms and teach using western methods of education. Education city looks like an American island in an Islamic environment. This could be the beginning of change in Qatar, especially for women.
Shekha Moza bint Nasser Al Misnad who runes education city, supports the new opportunists for women. Some Qatari parents are unhappy about education city and stopped their daughters from studying there because they don’t want them to sit and talk with other men students. Education officials sometimes want to see the curriculum change because they want it to match the Qatari culture. This city is the most expensive experiment. Qatar supports this city in all aspects. The difficulty that the education city faces is to bring the teachers to teach here in Arab gulf, only few teachers agree to live and stay here to teach. Qatar hopes to combine the universities where students can study subjects in other universities and in other disciplines. Also Qatar looks for the important programs that they need and brings it here to make the students study them and develop the society. Qatar foundation supports Qataris and non Qataris to study there. Also the students are very interested about this new kind of education. Studying there gives the students the scene to think more about the issues that happen around them so they will be effective in the society.
In conclusion , I think , the State of Qatar since launching its initiative to develop a good example of education for the entire world has made available to Qatari students opportunities to acquire the skills they need to compete in the global economy. The development of education in Qatar helped the country economically. The government of Qatar helps students and give them scholarships to scientifically advanced countries such as America, Canada, Britain. I think that education is the most important reasons which Qatar is becoming important economically and cognitively. In order to create an educated generation, governments must take care of the curriculum and work to provide the academic requirements. The Government of Qatar does.
